I wonder, somewhat, if the author was just relying on the romance genre to carry for the lack of actual emotional development. Which never helps.

And, yes, making every male character in love with your female protagonist reads like insecurity. I wouldn't have as much trouble if Chloe weren't as *aware* of his feelings. And it's sad to give up on a friendship, but if she really cared she wouldn't do that to him so consciously.
